I’ve heard of a number of multi-level marketing outfits, notably:
Amway
Avon Products, Inc.
Excel Communications
Herbalife
Mary Kay
Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc.
Pampered Chef
Tupperware Brands Corporation
There are many more, of course. Although some legitimate businesses use this model, a good deal of caution is in order.
In a legitimate company, income is derived from sales, and not from franchising sign-ups. If it’s easier to make money by signing up new vendors than by selling the product or service, then the business may well be a Ponzi scheme.
